IThe King family and the land
The land that became Kingswood was originally heavily forested, and it was used for farming. The suburb takes its name from a family that owned land here, the family of Governor Philip Gidley King. Kingswood is a suburb of western Sydney, in New South Wales, 52 kilometres west of the central business district of Sydney.
Other places in New South Wales are also called Kingswood, and this suburb is often confused with the nearby Kingswood Park. The founding year recorded for Kingswood is 1855, and farming was the use of the land. Kingswood lies in the City of Penrith local government area.
IICrossroads and the railway
In 1881 the area was known as Crossroads. The name came from the roads that met there: the Great Western Highway crossed The Northern Road, which is now called Parker Street. The land was used for farming, and the district's name changed in 1887.
In 1862 the railway reached the district, and the farmland was subdivided after that. A siding at Kingswood opened in 1887. On 2 August 1887 the district took the name Kingswood, and a post office that opened on 20 April 1887 as Cross Roads West was renamed Kingswood in August 1887.
IIIRecords kept in the suburb
The NSW State Archives and Reading Room is on O'Connell Street in Kingswood. Records from New South Wales public sector bodies are stored in the building, which was formerly known as the Western Sydney Records Repository. The suburb's postcode is 2747.
